Cure, care, education + research: all part of good practice in our multi-cultural AMC-UvA!
In the last 30 years, the number of migrants in the Netherlands has increased
from 200,000 to more than 2.6 million. This is 17% of the total population.
In Amsterdam more than 60% of the youth belongs to the migrant groups.
The AMC is located in a multi-cultural suburb where half of the population
is comprised of migrants. At the AMC a migrant study group has been active
for 9 years now. It consists of 12 members from varying disciplines.
This group, now calling itself the ‘Workgroup Ethnicity and Communication’, tries
to tackle the communication problems and lack of insight into the problems of
migrants by developing activities following the inter-cultural character of the AMC.
As an example, in the hospital we now use more professional interpreters.
